According to one renowned historian:

A long time ago in Southern Africa, people were displaced from their homes by unrest and tribal conflicts. These were the days of Difaqane. The Lehanga family of the Mtambele tribe was no exception to this. These people heard about Moshoeshoe the Great of Lesotho and how he welcomed people who were running away from Shaka Zulu 's spear in his Mountain Kingdom. So Lehanga and other Mtambele men took south with their families.

It was known by these Mtambele people that King Moshoeshoe would give them a place to live North-East of Thaba-Bosiu as he did with all people who seek asylum. However, Lehanga wanted his family to fully integrate with Basotho. This would be difficult since he had a large family. So he split his family into groups. Some called themselves Bakoena and settled among Bakoena West of Thaba-Bosiu. Some called themselves Bafokeng and were accepted by Bafokeng South-East of Thaba-Bosiu. Some decided not to change their tribe and settled with other Mtambele people North-East. All these groups retained their surname to maintain a link. Basotho could not pronounce Mtambele and Lehanga. These names ended up being Matebele and Lekhanya respectively.

Well that's the unconfirmed origins of Lekhanya family in Lesotho.
