Basotho ReligionI grew up in a Christian society. I was always under the impression that religion came with the first missionaries in Lesotho. But this did not make sense. So here are a few points I have discovered in my search for whether or not we had any form of belief before Christianity. GodSome of the names Basotho call God by:
I am still trying to find out what the first name means. The second one translated would be 'father of the savior'. The third one means god. OriginsWe believe that the first Mosotho came from a place called 'Ntsoana-Tsatsi'. To me, tsatsi in this name makes it sound as if our place of origin is some form of a sun. However, what is clear is that we do not associate our origin with evolution theories. ResurrectionWhen preparing a traditional grave, Basotho would dig vertically into the ground. Then they would dig horizontally on the West side of the grave. This formed a cave facing Eastwards. The dead were buried inside such a cave in squatting position. Some seed, turf and a straw mat were placed nearby. The squatting was done to ensure that everyone would be ready to run East when the day comes. Eternal LifeWhen a Mosotho dies, he or she joins the ancestors (balimo). The three items placed near the dead in the last paragraph, symbolized a belief that life does not end at death. |
